Summer Golf in the Heat - Golf Course Intel

Summer on the golf course can be a truly wonderful experience. The sun is shining, the fairways are lush, and the greens are rolling. But let’s be honest, the heat can also be a formidable opponent, turning a leisurely round into an energy-draining struggle. If you’re a golfer over 35, you know that staying comfortable and healthy on the course becomes even more crucial as the mercury rises.

We’ve all been there – feeling sluggish by the back nine, grips getting slippery, and focus fading faster than a poorly struck drive. But fear not! Playing enjoyable and effective golf in the heat is absolutely achievable with the right strategies. Think of it as another element of course management, just like navigating hazards or reading greens.

At Golf Course Intel, we’re all about smart golf, and that includes adapting to environmental conditions. While our personalized strategy guides focus on course-specific tactics, understanding how to handle the heat is fundamental to implementing those strategies effectively. So, grab your water bottle and your favorite breathable hat, because we’re diving into 10 essential tips to help you beat the heat and play your best summer golf.

Here are ten actionable tips to help you stay cool, comfortable, and on your game when the temperatures climb:

  1. Hydrate Like a Pro (Before, During, and After): This might seem obvious, but it’s the cornerstone of staying healthy and performing well in the heat. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to start drinking. Begin hydrating adequately the day before your round. On the course, sip water consistently, not just gulps here and there. Consider electrolyte-rich sports drinks in moderation, especially for longer rounds, to replenish lost minerals. Aim for at least half a liter of water per 9 holes, adjusting based on the temperature and humidity. Dehydration can significantly impact your energy levels, focus, and even your swing mechanics.
  2. Dress for Success (Light and Breathable): Leave the dark, heavy fabrics at home. Opt for light-colored, loose-fitting clothing made from breathable materials like performance polyester or moisture-wicking fabrics. These materials help your body regulate its temperature by allowing sweat to evaporate. A wide-brimmed hat is also non-negotiable for shielding your face, ears, and neck from the sun. Don’t forget UV-protective sunglasses to reduce glare and protect your eyes.
  3. Sunscreen is Your Best Friend: Just like hydration, sunscreen is a must. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher liberally to all exposed skin at least 20-30 minutes before you tee off. Reapply every two hours, especially if you’re sweating a lot. Sunburn can not only be painful but also dehydrating and increase your risk of skin cancer. Make it a routine part of your pre-round preparation.
  4. Understand Ball Carry in the Heat: Warmer air is less dense than cool air. This means your golf ball will generally travel slightly farther in hot weather due to reduced drag. While exact figures vary based on temperature, humidity, and altitude, you might see an increase of 2-5 yards on your longer clubs. Be mindful of this when selecting clubs, especially on approach shots. However, very high humidity can counteract some of this effect.
  5. Consider Green Speed and Softness: Hot weather often leads to faster and firmer greens. The lack of moisture can make the grass less receptive to approach shots, potentially leading to more run-out. Be prepared to adjust your approach shots by taking one less club or hitting shots with slightly more spin to control distance. Putting can also be affected; anticipate faster putts, especially downhill.
  6. Pace Yourself and Utilize Shade: Don’t rush your shots or your walk between holes. Take your time, especially on hot and humid days. Utilize any available shade on the course – under trees, near the clubhouse, or even under your umbrella if allowed. A few moments in the shade can make a significant difference in your energy levels. If you’re walking, consider using a push cart to conserve energy.
  7. Listen to Your Body (and Your Playing Partners): Pay attention to how you’re feeling. If you start to experience symptoms of heat exhaustion like dizziness, headache, nausea, or excessive fatigue, stop playing immediately and seek shade and hydration. Don’t push through the pain. Encourage your playing partners to do the same. Look out for each other, especially if someone seems to be struggling.
  8. Cooling Towels Can Be a Game-Changer: Invest in a cooling towel. These towels, when wet, can provide a surprising amount of cooling relief when draped around your neck or head. Re-wet them as needed throughout your round. They are a relatively inexpensive and highly effective way to combat the heat.
  9. Choose Your Tee Time Wisely: If possible, opt for earlier morning or late afternoon tee times when the sun’s intensity is typically lower. Midday rounds during the peak of summer heat can be particularly challenging. If you have flexibility, try to schedule your golf when the forecast calls for slightly cooler temperatures.
  10. Fuel Your Body Smartly: Just like hydration, proper nutrition plays a role in your energy levels. Avoid heavy, greasy foods before and during your round, as they can make you feel sluggish. Opt for lighter, easily digestible snacks like fruits, energy bars, or nuts. Replenishing electrolytes through drinks or salty snacks can also be beneficial.
