But before you start dreaming of making birdie on the Island Green, you need a solid game plan. A Brief History of the Swamp
Before you tee it up, it helps to know what you are walking into. Back in 1978, former PGA TOUR Commissioner Deane Beman bought 415 acres of heavily wooded Florida swampland for exactly one dollar. He teamed up with visionary architect Pete Dye to build the very first “Stadium Course” in the world, which officially opened in 1980. They intentionally designed a layout that favors no specific style of play, creating a beautifully balanced but penalizing test of golf.
Bring Your Wallet
If you’re lucky enough to score a tee time at the legendary Player’s Stadium Course, tee time rates start at $750 / player from September – May, but during the hottest summer months of June, July & August the minimum rate drops to $550 / player. A nice Sunday morning round in April will set you back $875.
Tee Selection: Check Your Ego
One of the fastest ways to ruin your scorecard here is playing from the wrong tees. The course offers a variety of yardages for men and women of all ages and abilities:
- TPC (Black): 7,352 yards
- Blue: 6,670 yards
- White: 6,086 yards
- Green: 5,019 yards
If you want to protect your handicap, play the tees that match your driver distance. For example, the Blue tees are recommended if your average drive is between 250 and 285 yards. If you aren’t carrying it that far, move up!
Golf Ball Selection
The greens here are wicked fast. During peak season, you will be putting on TifEagle bermudagrass that has been heavily overseeded with Poa trivialis and velvet bentgrass. Because these firm greens refuse to hold low-spinning shots, you need a premium urethane golf ball that provides maximum greenside control.

Club Selection & Recovery from Errors
Leave the driver in the bag if you are feeling shaky. The rough at TPC Sawgrass is allowed to grow to 2.5 inches, and the thick ryegrass will aggressively grab your clubhead. If you find the rough, do not try the hero shot. Take your medicine, pull out a wedge or short iron, and pitch back into the fairway. Attempting to force a long iron out of the thick grass usually leads to double bogeys.
The Gauntlet: 6 Holes You Must Respect
Here is a quick breakdown of what to expect on some of the most critical holes on the course:
- Hole 1 (Par 4, 423 yards): The ultimate mission statement of the course. You must hit the fairway to avoid thick rough and a massive bunker complex on the left. A smooth 3-wood off the tee is often the smartest play.
- Hole 4 (Par 4, 384 yards): Do not let the short yardage fool you. A fairway wood or long iron is practically mandatory off the tee to navigate a skinny fairway bordered by water and horrific rough.
- Hole 11 (Par 5, 558 yards): A massive momentum swinger! The fairway bends around a terrifying bunker nicknamed “The Scream”. Favor the right side of the fairway for your best angle of attack toward the water-protected green.
- Hole 16 (Par 5, 537 yards): A reachable par-5 that can make your round. You need a sweeping right-to-left tee shot, but beware of the water running all the way down the right side.
- Hole 17 (Par 3, 137 yards): The famous Island Green! Don’t let the water psych you out; the green is actually around 4,000 square feet, making it a very large target. Trust your wedge, account for the swirling wind, and swing with confidence.
- Hole 18 (Par 4, 462 yards): The final boss. Water guards the entire left side, and thick trees guard the right. Aim for the right-center of the fairway and rely on a crisp mid-iron to reach the severely tiered green.
