Golfer teeing off on the cliffside 16th hole at Port Royal Golf Course in Bermuda.

Welcome to paradise!

If you’re packing your clubs for a weekend in Bermuda, there is one tee time you absolutely cannot miss: Port Royal Golf Course. Known for its breathtaking ocean vistas and coastal winds, it’s a course that will test every club in your bag – and your mental fortitude.

Whether you’re a scratch golfer looking to break par or a weekend warrior just hoping not to lose a dozen golf balls, we’ve put together a friendly, comprehensive Port Royal Golf Course strategy guide to help you conquer this Bermudian jewel.

Port Royal isn’t just another beautiful resort course; it’s a government-owned municipal masterpiece that opened its doors in 1970 to make championship-caliber golf accessible to everyone. Designed by legendary architect Robert Trent Jones Sr., the course weaves through sweeping inland valleys before exploding onto the dramatic Atlantic cliffs.

In 2008 and 2009, original design team member Roger Rulewich led a $14.5 million renovation to modernize the course. Thanks to these pristine upgrades, Port Royal successfully hosted the PGA Grand Slam of Golf and is now the permanent home of the PGA Tour’s Butterfield Bermuda Championship.

Let’s get one thing out of the way: rent a golf cart! Despite its modest scorecard yardage, the walkability rating here is remarkably low due to severe, grueling elevation changes.

When it comes to tee selection, leave your ego in the clubhouse. The heavy, salt-laden winds and tight TifEagle Bermudagrass greens make this course play much longer than the scorecard suggests.

Using the standard USGA formula (Average Driver Distance x 28), here is what we recommend:

  • Low-Handicaps (Drive 270+ yds): Black Tees (6,842 yards)
  • Mid-Handicap Men (Drive ~230 yds): Blue Tees (6,401 yards) – This is the sweet spot for the average player!
  • High-Handicap Men / Low-Handicap Women (Drive 200-210 yds): White Tees (5,894 yards)
  • Mid-to-High Handicap Women (Drive 150-180 yds): Red Tees (5,176 yards)

Playing Port Royal requires accepting that par is a great score, and a bogey is often a successful escape. Here is a quick strategic breakdown for every level of golfer, highlighting three crucial decision-making moments for the mid-handicapper.

Hole 1: Low-handicaps should use a 3-wood to avoid the hidden right-side pond. Mid-handicappers should take a hybrid for rhythm, while high-handicaps can freely hit driver since the water is out of reach.

Hole 2: This sweeping par 5 features a 150-yard forced water carry off the tee. Mid-handicappers often make the mistake of trying to cut the corner. Don’t do it! Play a safe drive left of center. On your second shot, resist the urge to go for the raised green. Advance the ball with a hybrid up the right side, leaving a comfortable wedge into the heavily bunkered putting surface.

Hole 3: A par 3 over a lake. Low-handicaps can fire at the pin. Mid and high-handicaps must take an extra club to clear the false front.

Hole 4: A blind uphill tee shot. Lows hit driver; high-handicaps should treat this grueling hole as a par 5.

Hole 5: A pinched fairway. Mids should play a hybrid off the tee to ensure they find the short grass.

Hole 6: A depressed valley blocks the green. High-handicaps should lay up short of the deep bunkers.

Hole 7: The ocean views finally explode! Low-handicaps can go for this par 5 in two; everyone else should play a strategic layup.

Hole 8: This 213-yard par 3 plunges downhill toward the ocean. The infinity-edge green is visually terrifying, and missing long means losing your ball to the Atlantic. For the mid-handicapper, the hero shot is a trap. Aim for the absolute center of the green, or intentionally lay up short into the fairway collection area. Taking a bogey here is far better than a blow-up triple-bogey.

Hole 9: A severe uphill par 4. Everyone needs to club up at least once on the approach.

Hole 10: The dramatic elevation changes of the back nine begin here. Hit a hybrid off the tee to avoid the corner traps.

Hole 11: A huge, blind downhill drive. Mids and highs must aim right to avoid the severe drop-off on the left.

Hole 12: A claustrophobic target. High-handicaps should happily pitch on safely and two-putt.

Hole 13: A downhill par 3 where wind heavily affects ball flight. Keep it low.

Hole 14: If your tee shot misses right, the approach is totally blind. Mids must play safely down the left.

Hole 15: The ocean looms left. High-handicaps should swallow their pride and play this as a par 5.

Hole 16 (The Signature Hole): You’ve seen the photos. It’s 235 yards entirely over the Atlantic cliffs. Even 2009 U.S. Open Champion Lucas Glover famously said on this tee box, “Man, I’ve never been so nervous on a shot,” which is now immortalized on a plaque located near the back tees. Mid and high-handicappers should completely ignore the pin. Aim directly at the bailout basin on the right side. Pitch on, take your bogey, and enjoy the unbelievable view.

Hole 17: A par 5 into a heavy headwind. Everyone should lay up rather than risk the water.

Hole 18: A steep uphill finish. Take two extra clubs on your approach to clear the false front and finish your round strong.

Because of the heavy coastal winds and thick Zeon Zoysia rough, Port Royal will inflate your score. Set realistic expectations before you tee off:

  • Low-Handicaps: Expect to shoot 80-85.
  • Mid-Handicaps: A great weekend round will land between 94-96.
  • High-Handicaps: Expect to shoot anywhere from 103 to 113 – just enjoy the views and the sunshine!

Duff - Golf Course Intel Data

Duff Robertson

I spent 12 years as a teaching pro at a private course, but I realized there was a gap: golfers had swing tips, but not clear course strategies backed by real numbers. That’s what pulled me into AI and data analysis. I traded in my daily lessons for helping to build Golf Course Intel.
